What is HiveGuard?

A smart-tech, IoT based system designed to help beekeepers improve the efficacy of their care through the implementation of sensors, data collection, and an associated smartphone application.

Our ideal design in future iterations would be a system that balances the augmentation of data provision with the implementation of devices that could automate parts of the beekeeping process.

Primary System Functions

• Temperature Regulation: Heat sensors placed inside and outside of hive to monitor for dangerously low or high temperatures.
• Hive Weight Monitoring: Weight sensors for both bee and honey quantity to monitor productivity of hive.
• Queen Bee Monitoring: RFD tag placed on the queen to track her location.
• Pest Management: Cameras with video detection software trained to recognize pests and alert user when treatment should be applied.

Development Story

Originally during our development process we wanted to develop an IoT based system that has some meaningful impact in the environmental space. Original areas we explored were improving home care for plants and recycling, but upon further research we found beekeeping was an area that would be truly exciting to explore. Bees are an absolutely crucial part of our ecosystem and economy through their ability foster biodiversity.
